Maggi never looked this good
|
|
So I told Aly, malas la nak pikir theme.. I'm sick of white walls and the black background. Let's just shoot around the apartment. At first I was shooting aimlessly till Aly said she was hungry. ( Mind you her make-up and hair took up 2-3 hours. So by the time we started shooting it was 10pm. ) Anyway, what's the easiest to cook around the house at 10pm - our beloved maggi.. what else? So the whole shoot revolved around her cooking maggi, eating, looking satisfied and finally clonking down on black cloth for some aerial shots.
I was pretty satisfied, this was the first time I'm actually using my 50mm in a shoot and it wasn't just the model and some background.
added April 6:
Someone had a question on my gear. Erm.. nothing much. Just a light stand, brolly (umbrella), SB-24, 50mm, and 18-200mm. I'll post a picture of my typical lighting setup. I've yet to master it.. well.. not until I can get myself into one of Ted's classes.

I'll edit the post with more pics from the series as I process them.

Beauty Retouching
|
 |
|
Exhale, love.
|
|
|
Aww man, huge thanks to to editors (whoever you guys are) for the recognition
A few people wanted to know on the techniques used in my beauty shots below. So.. you'll be happy to know that I've actually wrote 3 tutorials on basic retouching. I won't attempt to repost here; just because they contain a lot of pictures and that'll just clutter up the page. You can access the tutorials either at my livejournal page (*points to the link at the left*) or you can have a look it at the 'Malaysian Photographers' discussion forum:
1. Blemish removal
2. Eyebags removal
3. Airbrushing
(I understand that a lot of you don't have an account there. So just post your questions here and I'll try my best to clear up any confusion.)
Now don't go and start applying it to every single picture that you have. (Nampak macam everyone is trying to apply HDR technique to ALL their photos at the moment. People, learn properly what HDR is about first, learn the objective.. then if it's needed, apply it)
Simple guidelines of good images for retouching jobs:
- Subject should be properly lit so that you can actually zoom in at 200% and see every single pores
- Subjects should be sharp. The reason is that, when you apply the airbrush technique, you will have the tendency to blur out some details. A blurry image will only make it worse.
- Shoot at the highest resolution AND at the lowest ISO. I've tried working with an image shot at ISO 800.. its possible but it gets annoying.
There simple isn't it? Oh.. just remember that if you retouch the face, then you need to retouch the neck/hands/any other visible skin.
I think that covers it for now.
Disclaimer: I'm not a pro retoucher.. so do not take my word for granted. I didn't take any classes or paid anyone to teach me the techniques.. They are all scattered everywhere on the internet. And, I always tell everyone, google is your bestfriend ( and wikipedia is your second bestfriend )
I'll end the post with one recent shot:

Beauty

I'm amused by the shear number of Msians on fotopages. How did this happen?
Suddenly every mother and their daughter owns a camera... AND it seems like everyone wants to be wedding photographer.
No offense to anyone.. but hey.. chill... wedding photography is not the only type of photography. Leave that to the pros... and I can assure there's more than enough of pros out there. (ok.. maybe I'm generalizing too much.. there's more than enough in KL)
Enough ranting for the day.. on to the photos.
This time it'll be beauty photography, another favorite category of mine.
I tend to spend A LOT of time retouching beauty shots. Here's a before and after:
Here's a typical workflow:
1. Levels adjustment
2. Curves adjustment
3. Blemish removal
4. Highlights removal
5. Airbrush skin
6. Fill in brow
7. Sharpen eyes
8. Levels adjustment for background
9. Sharpen everything but the eyes
10. Voila.
And I'll shall end the post with my fav out of the bunch:

Black and White
|
|
I finally got the hang of black and white conversion. So these are my favorites...
hmm.. tones aren't as best as the pros.. but bolehla for a first timer.
If you have any questions, do ask and I'll try my best to answer them.
if I had to pick out of the bunch, this would be my favorite:

Mod Shoot
|

Heh.. I'm finally here at fotopages.
My first proper shoot with the umbrella setup. Images were a bit overexposed but it was a great experience, nonetheless.
